O Homem das Montanhas acompanhava a vida do fazendeiro James Adams (Dan Haggerty), que é acusado de um crime que não cometeu. Por isso, ele decide fugir para as montanhas. No caminho ele salva a vida de um filhote de urso cinzento que passa a acompanhá-lo. Batizado de Ben (em homenagem à Benjamin Franklin), o urso se torna o melhor amigo de Adams, que também faz amizades com o mercador Jack (Denver Pyle), que servia de narrador da série, e o índio Nakoma (Don Shanks). Nas montanhas, Adams aprende a conviver com a terra e seus animais, enquanto se mantém longe de caçadores de recompensas. Ao longo dos episódios, ele se encontra com diversos personagens que passam pelas montanhas.
